By 1918, the soils in eastern and southeast Kansas had such low stores of phosphorus that it was profitable to purchase phosphorus fertilizers. Soil science is the investigation of soil as a characteristic asset on the surface of the Earth including soil formation, classification, mapping, physical, chemical, organic, properties of soils as they relate to the production of food and fiber.
